Smokey Robinson is coming to Jennifer Lopez’s defense after haters aimed at her participation in the Grammys’ Motown tribute, criticizing a Latina representing an African American institution.
“Motown is for everybody,” Robinson told TMZ. “Motown is universal. We broke down racial barriers with music.”
“To confine Motown as something that only black people can represent or be a part of is a stupid philosophy to me,” he continued. “Anyone who loves Motown would be proud of us, would be proud we broke down those barriers, would be proud that other people love Motown and love Motown music.”
The publication also released the Motown icon’s lengthy statement on the matter, saying that “Motown united people not divided them.”
