Chris Rock has been in the center of criticism thanks to a joke he recently made on Instagram. Fans of Whitney Houston, as well as her ex-husband Bobby Brown, were not happy with the fact that the comedian used a picture of the late songstress as he joked about drugs.
Taking to the photo-sharing site, Rock posted a meme which featured a photo of Houston looking unenthusiastic during an interview. The text on the meme read, “Me sitting in a meeting that could’ve been an email.” While the meme itself was harmless, the things that Rock wrote in the caption was what made many people angry. “Hurry up I got crack to smoke,” he said, likely referring to Houston’s drugs abuse.
The joke fell flat with many of his followers who called it “tasteless,” “trash,” terrible” and “not funny.” Brown also joined in the hate train, telling the funnyman, “During this time of women empowerment you chose to use your time to try and humiliate our QUEEN!!!” Expressing his disappointment in Rock, Brown added in another post, “I thought you was a friend of the family.”
Rock deleted the post afterward.
Houston, who married Brown for more than a decade, infamously struggled with substance abuse issues throughout her career, including multiple stints in rehab towards the end of her life. She died in 2012 when she accidentally drowned in a bathtub in Los Angeles from a combination of heart disease and cocaine use. Bobbi Kristina, her daughter with Brown, died in a similar manner three years later.
Last year, Brown slammed Kanye West for paying $85,000 to license a photo of Houston’s drug-strewn bathroom for the cover art of Pusha T’s album “Daytona”. He said at the time, “Why would he post that on his album cover? That’s really disgusting that he would do that. That’s in really bad taste.”
