Chalkdust back in final

Nine-time National Calypso Monarch Chalkdust (Hollis Liverpool) will make an attempt at claiming his tenth title, having made it to the competition’s final, to be held on Thursday at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

At Saturday’s Calypso Fiesta, the Calypso Monarch semi-finals, at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, Chalkdust performed “Murder Frenzy”, questioning the authorities on their handling of the crime situation.

The crowd, which grew steadily towards capacity through the evening, seemed to appreciate Chalkdust’s offering.

Also making it to the final is Heather MacIntosh with her admonition of the hierarchy of the Anglican Church, “Claude”. Her song of protest against last year’s fashion show at Trinity Cathedral, featuring bikini-clad models, was well received by the audience.

Former monarch Duane O’Connor, who also addressed the fashion show issue, secured a berth in the final with his fine performance of “Not In Here”.

Defending Extempo Monarch Brian London performed “Boo (Shame On You)”, a uniquely-fashioned calypso shaming criminals, politicians and even the producers of the International Soca Monarch competition, which earned him a shot at the title, being defended by his nephew, Ronaldo London.

Another quite unique song was “Welcome To Chinatown” by Singing Sonia, who is also in the final.

Some people are of the opinion that the song, which speaks against the labelling of Charlotte Street, Port of Spain, as “Chinatown”, as borderline racist but the patrons lapped it up and the judges gave it the nod.

The show moved along quickly for the most part, with one major hold-up when Tameka Darius refused to begin her performance when she realised that the time clock was already at two minutes when she took the stage.

It took the better part of 20 minutes to resolve the issue.

There were also technical issues with the sound system through the evening, affecting some of the calypsonians, notably Helon Francis, who didn’t make it through to the final.
